Ready, Set, Namaste: why you should do Yoga & Adorn Your Soul

Whether you are a yogi, yoga teacher or someone who has only heard about yoga you are in the right place. If you do yoga you have a personal reason, it could be anything from physical strength, mindfulness, movement, patience, good vibes or just the feel good feeling.

I started doing yoga almost three years ago, because I was always sore from dance and was also going through a rough time, so it was the perfect addition. Literally, one day while I was working at my corporate job, I was talking to one of my colleauge's about the soreness I was feeling in every muscle of my body. She suggested that, I should do yoga, then referred me to a local yoga studio that was close to work. As always, I dragged Kim who is my best friend and used to be a colleauge to class as she is my all time workout body and that was it, I fall in love with yoga, sort of love at first sight situation. My teacher was a 70 years old women, who was the kindest and one of the most beautiful women I've ever met. After that, I continued my practice in a variety of studios in LA and decided to share my experience with others and signed up for a 200 hour yoga teachers training. So, here I am almost done with the training as its the last weekend and then I'm off to teaching classes for my certificate. I would say that, I'm a different person after the training and overall after introducing yoga in to my life and I'm forever grateful for my teachers at Yoga Blend who shared their brilliant knowledge and thought us how to be better, stronger and soulful human beings. Below, you can find some of the strong reasons you should also start doing yoga:

1) It'll spike your creative juices
Yoga will make space for all the creativity to flow, but it wont happen overnight. So, try to do yoga as often as you can and the ideas will flow, maybe from the sky. lol You can also do short yoga sequences at home, there are a ton of tutorials on YouTube and apps that you can use. Also, don't forget about Instagram, just do a quick search and trust me you'll find great tutorials. Don't forget to flip through yoga magazines, usually you can find them in your yoga studio or a bookstore. If you are in LA, LA Yoga is one of my favorites. 

2) The feel good feeling: yoga will make you happy and it'll energize you
Yes, its true. We've all been there, you convince yourself to go workout and when you are done you can not literally move because you are extremely tired for some reason, either you didn't eat before working out, or you had a rough day then a rough workout, the reasons are infinite. If you go to a yoga class, you'll come out refreshed and ready to do whatever you've planned to do. The reason behind this is that, we are out and about in the world and on daily basis we encounter different situations and people. Some of these become indigested experiences and they block you from seeing the light, these experiences are called prakriti. Purusa state is where we want to be: it is our joyful, loving, energized and confident soul. So, every time you do yoga you clear some of those indigested experiences and it opens up the space for you to be your true and whole self, thats why you feel good, ta da the secret is revealed! The more you do it, the better you'll feel. These terms are more philosophical parts of yoga, but you can read more on them if interested.

3) It's a great workout
You can adapt the practices to your own speed and level of comfort. No matter which type of yoga you choose, the practices will always be part of a great workout routine. Also, depending on the time of the day you choose to do yoga, the teacher would plan their class based on that and they'll adjust their sequence based on the class ability and would offer you variations based on your body and health condition, specially if you are taking a vinyasa flow (movement based) class.

4) Yoga is the ultimate stress reliever
Feeling grumpy, tired or unmotivated? Head to your yoga studio or get on that yoga playlist on Spotify (search for 'yoga flow' or 'yoga), lay your mat on the floor and start practicing at home. Research shows that, practicing yoga can reduce stress levels and lower blood pressure. It can even reduce symptoms of anxiety + depression.

5) Yoga will lead to a happier state of mind
Let your body be your ultimate guide and make sure you are enjoying the class you are attending and you feel amazing after you are done. If thats not the case, then there are two reasons behind it: 1) the teacher is not the right teacher for you 2) the yoga class you've chosen is not the right class for you. Try a different class or a different teacher or even change studios. There will be a class you'll walk in and fall in love with the teacher, the humor and the vibe of the studio. If you love moving with music, then go to classes that flow with music. I personally love that, what else do you need? Dope music, flow and strengthening the connection between your mind, body and soul which leads to a joyful disposition. Also, yoga will help you have a more clear vision and it'll strengthen your can-do attitude. Calling all #girlbosses!

6) It'll heal your headache or migraine
If you are like me and get constant migraine headaches or tension headaches, yoga would definitely help you ease the pain. There are specific yoga poses for headache. Also, meditation and yoga nidra, which is guided meditation is an amazing addition to your practice, specially if you have a tension headache.

7) It can help your breathing technique
A big part of yoga is the breathing exercises, or the pranayama which is incorporated into different poses and on its own. 'Move with your breath' is usually the queue you'll hear from your teacher during your practice. Being mindful and bringing your attention back to your inhale and exhale, that'll keep your mind focused and it wont let it wander around :). This is to encourage a more focused and centered way of breathing, and while they might not be something you’ll do consciously every day, they’re absolutely sure to provide methods of effective stress-management and generally make you feel much better. It definitely took me a while to start breathing like Yogis, so don't be hard on yourself if you are struggling with getting it right, it'll come in time. As they say, practice makes it perfect.

8) It can help you sleep better or sleep if you have a hard time falling sleep
When you do yoga, your body is relaxed, your mind is calm and ready to rest. It is proven that, the practice can help with insomnia. If you have problems getting to sleep, working on problem-areas through yoga can help alleviate pain symptoms and increase the likelihood of a better sleep. Another benefit is that most yoga practices have a cool-down sequence at the end, which can definitely induce some easy slumber. 9) It'll improve your posture
Yoga is pretty effective in helping you develop some premium, proper posture, since a lot of the breathing and seated positions require a straight back for proper effect. Good posture is definitely going to develop during a yoga practice. My posture, has definitely improved and I feel that I carry myself differently.

10) Having a community, being in a safe space and feeling safe
Talking of building your tribe and yoga family, yes!!! Your yoga studio can become your home, you'll see regulars, make friends and slowly you'll join the yogis community in your hood if you are taking classes in your area. Your vibe attracts your tribe. You may have a lot of friends, but they may not specifically be into Yoga, so make new friends and enjoy yourself even more when you practice. My teacher training tribe definitely consists of many awesome, compassionate and lovely people who became family recently.

Namaste, means the light in me sees and honors the brightest light in each and every one of you. In this case, it means that I believe in you and your abilities and I know that you can do it. Sometimes we underestimate our abilities or get caught up by visuals like those magnificent poses on Instagram or any other social media channel. Yoga is not about being perfect it's just about being and doing what serves your body and mind. Any body type deserves a self care, every breath deserves attention and every soul deserves some extra light. Who is ready to set and Namaste? :)
